The Manitoba Passion Play, an annual highlight at the Oak Valley Outdoor Theatre in La Riviere, MB, showcased its special 24th season this July.

Held on the weekends of July 5-7 and July 13-14, 2024, the production continues to draw crowds from across Southern Manitoba and beyond.

"We've had close to 50,000 people come over the years," said Richard Klassen, Oak Valley Production Board Member.  "This is more than just a story. It's a faith that means a lot to so many people, every night we have lots of feedback, and people returning and telling us how much they've appreciated it and how they've been touched by the story."

This production is more than just an account of the final days of Jesus Christ's life. It is a joint effort of countless volunteers from various Christian denominations, all united in their dedication to performing this pivotal story. As Artistic Director Belita Sanderson highlights, the play involves many hours of planning and the commitment of volunteer board members, who work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure its success.

"It means everything. The beautiful story of Jesus is so close to my heart. Of course, it's close to a lot of people's hearts. It's amazing to be able to put on his life story like this and a message of hope," said Belita Sanders who has been the Artistic Director for 24 years. "It's just mind-blowing that after all these years, we can still keep putting it on and that there's volunteers coming forward and that it's just so inspiring. It's a real honour to do it."

The Passion Play was created to communicate the story of Jesus Christ and has a rich tradition, with its roots tracing back to the Middle Ages. Oak Valley's version incorporates new scenes alongside traditional narratives, providing a fresh and faithful perspective on the Passion of Christ.

"It's the greatest story ever told. So why wouldn't we want to tell it?" said Jason Dyck, involved in the Orchestra organization.

Audience members are treated to high-quality performances and moving orchestral music performed by volunteer musicians. Thanks to generous donations from supporters, a new sound system further enhanced the experience.

For those interested in becoming part of this production, opportunities are avaliable through acting, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, the Passion Play welcomes all to join in its mission of retelling the timeless story of Jesus Christ.

"I'm totally amazed. We didn't know what we were getting into when we first started... and it is just very inspiring," said Delores one of the first board members ever involved. "I think it spreads itself through the audience. Plus the cast members spread it too. We all do."

Looking ahead, the Manitoba Passion Play is preparing for its 25th anniversary next year, with performances scheduled for July 4-6 and 11-12, 2025. This milestone promises to be a very special occasion, celebrating a quarter-century of bringing this powerful message to life.
