The RM of Estevan is looking for a bit of support to increase the speed limits for the highways surrounding Estevan.

During last night's city council meeting, a resolution for the RM went to the city council asking them to write a letter of support for the proposal.

Estevan council member Lindsay Clark says that they'd look to check with the Southeast Transportation Planning Committee for a safety study, which would then go to the province.

"The RM of Estevan was wanting us to support them to increase the speed limit from the bypasses and they wanted to do that by taking it to the Ministry of Highways. So I think what we've said tonight is we'll take it to the Southeast Transportation Committee and see if the Ministry of Highways would be willing to look at that."

Clark is also a representative of the Southeast Transportation Planning Committee, representing the urban Estevan area.

Speed limits would be increased From the following three roads:

  1. Highway 47 North from Township Road 25 to the Bypass.
  2. Highway 39 from the weigh scales to Nelson Motors.
  3. Highway 39 from Range Road 2080 to Cervus Equipment.

Clark says that he feels that the approach is a bit slow but would like to look at the safety of increasing those limits.

"You know I've driven out there and it seems a little slow coming in. I mean, I think there's not a lot of off roads and probably an increase wouldn't hurt anything. But there's a group that looks after safety, and it'd be pretty important for them to take a look at it I think as well."
