Sylvan Lake will be the host for a huge beach handball tournament, this weekend on Saturday and Sunday(July 27th and 28th.)

The tournament is in conjunction with Calgary Handball, Team Canada Handball Federation and Central Alberta Handball.

Collette Groenen, The Secretary Treasurer, for Central Alberta Handball, talks about the event and where the teams are coming from.

"We have teams coming in from Quebec and Saskatchewan, many teams from the Edmonton area, Central Alberta area, California and Kentucky coming up to compete in Team Beach Town Ball. The handball community is actually a small community and so we get to know players from all over the world. When we go to international tournaments, we put out the invitation and they choose to come on up."

Groenen says the Central Alberta Handball scene is quite active.

"For beach handball right now, I think we're looking at about 32 players. This is all over central Alberta. So Bentley, Innisfail, Lacombe, Red Deer, and Ponoka. They are all just combined to make a team for handball."

Team Canada is hosting the tournament through Calgary Handball and Central Alberta Handball. The coaches for Team Canada Beach Handball are based out of Sylvan and Bentley for the Team Canada women's and the Team Canada men's coaches are in Calgary.

There are still spots available for the inexperienced teams. If you would like more information check out the Central Alberta Handball Facebook and Instagram pages.
