Dorothy Jean Pomfret

Dorothy Pomfret passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 3, 2024, at the Central Parkland Lodge in Lanigan, SK. She was born May 28, 1932, at the Nokomis Hospital. She was the youngest of two daughters of Arthur & Olive Nadiger. Growing up on a farm during the depression was hard work, so she and her sister Helen learned to milk the cows, help with haying, and stooking.
Dorothy attended Haliburton, then Lockwood School. She became a teacher and taught at Manresa School near Sinnet and was the last teacher to teach at Haliburton before it closed in 1953.
On November 28, 1950, she married the love of her life, Bert Pomfret. Their 71-year marriage was blessed with one daughter, Gwen. Dorothy and Bert farmed for many years with her father Arthur Nadiger and later their son-in-law Dave Robson. She was a very capable combine driver and grain truck operator.
Bert and Dorothy hosted their nieces and nephews each summer. They have a lot of fond memories from those summer days. She would teach them how to knit or crochet, make buns and cookies, can vegetables and fruit. Her pantry in the farmhouse basement was impressive with all her canning.
She also loved to play bingo. She would go each week to Nokomis or Lanigan and was a regular in Arizona at the local bingo night. Dorothy also enjoyed trips to the casino to play the slot machines. Over the years she went on some casino bus trips including the dazzling Vegas strip.
Dorothy was very artistic as well. She could cook, can, sew, paint, quilt, crotchet, knit, embroider, and do Bunka. She was a certified teacher in the art of Bunka, a Japanese embroidery, that she taught in the trailer park for years. She had a huge garden, just like her father. There were hundreds of potatoes planted each year, a huge raspberry patch, strawberries, corn, cucumbers, carrots, the works. She tended to that garden religiously.
In the early 90's, Dorothy and Bert stated travelling to Mesa, Arizona, every winter and continued for 27 years. There she was known as the “jam lady”, the “bun lady” and the “Bunka lady” within their trailer park. She had a few tables every Friday to sell all her goods at the flea market in their park. She had jams, jellies, buns, crotched scrubbies, homemade quilts, crotchet dishcloths, afghans, slippers and embroidery, and don’t forget the scotch mints!! She was a very busy lady when she was wintering in the states. They made many friends from across the nation during their time there.
In 2001, they retired to Humboldt. There she continued to garden and do her canning and preserves. She would take Bert to coffee every day when he could no longer drive. Together they managed the raspberry patch, flower beds and a large vegetable garden. She enjoyed company and was very close to her neighbours – being that grandparent figure to the neighbouring kids. She hosted many friends and family in Humboldt as well.
Dorothy was a member of many organizations including the Haliburton Community Club, the Lockwood Legion Ladies Auxiliary, then transferred the Lanigan after Lockwood disbanded, and the Lockwood Curling Club. She was an avid curler, and she had many trophies to prove it. She was the vice chairperson for the Prairie Rose Memories history book and her artwork dons the cover.
Dorothy’s last few years were spent at the Central Park Lodge in Lanigan as her memory slowly faded away. She will be remembered as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, teacher, neighbour, and friend.
Dorothy will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughter, two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren:
Gwen (Dave) Robson and family; Allison (Shawn) Bartel and children Cade, Kaylin, and Mesa; Darryl (Danielle) Robson and children Ava, Keaton, and Drew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Olive Nadiger; parents-in-law Frank and Olive Pomfret; sister and brother-in-law Helen and Mack Barron; brother-in-law Don Pomfret, and sister-and-brother-in-law Verna and Dick Green; nephew Art (Janet) Barron, great nephew Steven Barron, and numerous friends.
A Funeral Service for Dorothy was held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt, officiated by Rev. Jack Robson. Interment took place in Lockwood Cemetery. Memorial donations in Dorothy’s memory may be directed to Central Parkland Lodge – Activity Fund or Lockwood Cemetery Fund.
