The warm, dry weather in Weyburn is expected to continue for a bit longer.

Environment Canada is calling for temperatures to get up into the 30s right through the weekend, and well into next week. One question, though, is whether or not it will get warm enough in the southeast corner of the province to prompt heat warnings to be issued.

“You guys are going to be pretty close to the warning criteria,” said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “I think eventually you’ll get into it, but you may be very close to it for the next few days.”

A heat warning is issued for southeastern Saskatchewan if the daytime temperature will be over 32°, and the overnight low warmer than 16° for two consecutive days. The forecast isn’t calling for the daytime temperature to get over 32° until the middle of next week, but overnight lows will be just at the 16° or warmer mark for much of the next few days.

With the heat comes many wondering about the possibility of thunderstorms. Right now, the thunderstorm outlook from Environment Canada indicates there is a minor risk of storms today to the west and north of the Weyburn area, but Lang said it doesn’t mean we won’t see anything before the weekend gets here.

“Over the next couple of days, there’ll be a chance of showers and thundershowers, but certainly that’s going to be hit and miss, and nothing organized,” explained the meteorologist. “We do have to wait for this ridge to break down before we’ll see any kind of more organized precipitation. Right now, the models are still not really agreeing, but it does look like more towards the end of next week.”

Lang noted there is one other thing we will notice as the heat intensifies.

“This year, we’re also contending with the humidity, which we haven’t had over the last couple years, so people should buckle in for a long heat event.”
