Southeast Saskatchewan could see thunderstorms later today, as a few of the conditions needed for a storm are present. However, what does develop is expected to be disorganized, with scattered storms, weak winds, and no real shift in the wind pattern, which means it is unlikely anything severe could develop.

The Environment Canada thunderstorm outlook for the day is calling for a minor risk of a severe storm developing in the Weyburn area. If one does develop, it could have upwards of 50 millimetres of rain, along with 80 kilometre-an-hour wind gusts.

The rain is the biggest threat associated with the outlook, with a cold front moving from northern Quebec towards the prairies. When this meets the warm, humid air over the southern parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, it could produce slow-moving storms that have the possibility of dumping a lot of rain in a short time span.

Any storms that do develop, though, will do little to help with the heat.

“The heat will intensify,” said meteorologist Terri Lang. “This year, we’re also contending with the humidity, which we haven’t had over the last couple years, so people should buckle in for a long heat event.”

The current forecast is calling for temperatures to be in the low-30s over the weekend. However, by next Thursday, the mercury could be getting up toward the high 30s. Stay up to date with the latest forecast by visiting the Discover Weyburn Weather page.
