The city of Estevan could see a new daycare coming into operation with a bylaw being discussed which would open the doors to the development.

During the latest city council meeting, a report from Land Development Services talked about the project and what it was bringing to the area.

The report detailed three undeveloped residential lots along the south side of Wellock Road, located near St. Joseph's Hospital. The developer intends to acquire the three lots and develop a commercial daycare on the properties.

As such the report goes over the possibility of condensing those three lots into a single one and rezoning the area, along with the developer needing a development and building permit.

The proposed new zoning district would fall under the Commercial (C5) Zoning District category, which would be similar to the nearby hospital and West Estevan Mall.

Land Development Services and City Engineering are confident that the proposed development can be serviced with road access and utilities without any adverse impacts on adjoining lands following a preliminary technical assessment of the project.

The council then read the bylaw which would change the zoning of the lots, which would fail if the developer does not end up receiving a development permit.

The public has time to make any concerns known about the project before the next reading, which is scheduled for August 19, 2024.
