A look at the layout option selected by town council.

The layout for the planned skate park and inclusive playground in Okotoks' Howard Park has been decided on.

While council already chose Howard Park as the location in September, they narrowed down the layout at the July 15 council meeting.

Following the approval of Howard Park, the town received a $100,000 Enabling Accessibility grant through the federal government to replace the park's current playground with an inclusive one

In the spring, exploration of the site showed an excess of "brown material," in the area where the skate park was originally recommended to be built, which is where the current playground stands.

Three options were presented to council, including one that would involve building the skate park in the preferred location, which would add an estimated $300,000 to the project to remove the excess topsoil.

Council voted in favour of the layout that places the new inclusive playground in the same spot as the old one, since building a playground in that location wouldn't require structural fill.

The skate park will be built close to the playground just to the northeast, which will require the pathway to be realigned.

From here, the skate park design will be finalized and concept designs for the playground will be developed followed by feedback from the community.

Construction is set to start in 2025 after budget approval.
