The Alberta Government has made raising money through crowdfunding easier.

Since 2021, through the Crowdfunding Alberta platform, non-profit organizations have been able to raise money for their cause, with a bit of extra help from the Provincial Government.

Non-profits help to support and build vibrant communities in Alberta, and through the Crowdfunding Alberta platform, the Alberta government will match 50 per cent of the raised funds on eligible campaigns, up to a maximum of $5,000 annually, making each donation more impactful.

"I encourage all Albertans and non-profits to take advantage of the Crowdfunding Alberta platform. The critical work of non-profits never stops. From kids’ camps to animal rescue, donations through Crowdfunding Alberta help non-profits achieve their community goals,” explained the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Status of Women Tanya Fir in a media release from July 22nd.

In order for a campaign to make it onto the Crowdfunding Alberta platform, they are pre-screened to make sure they are a legitimate and credible Alberta-based organization.

Since its launch in 2021, 220 non-profits have used this platform and combined they raised roughly $1.2 million, which includes over $230,000 from the Alberta government in matching funds.

On top of the Provincial government adding funds to the eligible causes, Albertans are eligible to receive a tax credit for any money they donate.

Albertans are eligible to receive a tax credit of 60 per cent on the first $200 they donate to a charity that is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and will receive a 21 per cent tax credit on each additional dollar donated.
