CPKC has released an official update on the train derailment just outside Gull Lake detailing the extent of the damage.
At about 5 p.m. last night a CPKC train separated, and 18 cars derailed in total. All of the cars contained potash, valued at $426 per metric tonne. CPKC stated that there were no injuries and there is no threat to public health.
As of 8:30 this morning, more than eight excavators were cleaning up the wreckage. The right lane of the Trans-Canada Highway was blocked off, and traffic was slowed to 60 kilometres per hour through the area. The intersection featuring the blocked railroad crossing was controlled by the CPKC police, who diverted motorists towards the Gull Lake Truck Bypass.
CPKC’s official release did not outline potential causes but stated that the derailment is under investigation.
