This is not something you hear about every day, but Alberta Parks issued a warning for a ball python on the loose in Kananaskis Country.

On Sunday, July 21st a Ball Python was seen near the Bow Valley dump station around 11:00 a.m. While it's obviously not a native species they are common pets. They are non-venomous and native to sub-Saharan Africa.

The warning was issued on Monday, July 22 for the Bow Valley Provincial Park, Bow Valley Campground and Willow Rock Campground.

If you do spot the snake, you're asked to call Kananaskis Emergency Services at 403-591-7755.

And there's been another bear warning in Kananaskis Country.

This also occurred on Sunday, July 21 as Alberta Parks issued a warning for the Ribbon Creek Trail near Kananaskis Village.

A bluff charge by a black bear sow with two cubs precipitated the warning from the Ribbon Creek Trail trailhead to Memorial Lakes junction.

The advisory is in place until further notice.

Alberta Parks shared some tips to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear.

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use bear spray.
  • Learn more about bear safety on their webpage or at WildSmart.

You're also asked to report all bear sightings as soon as possible to 403-591-7755.
