The Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding residents to take precautions as smoke moves into the area, drastically impacting the air quality of Weyburn and the surrounding area. The smoke, which is coming from wildfires to the north, has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special air quality advisory.

Dr. Stanley Enebeli, the medical health officer for the Weyburn and Estevan area, said those who are at higher risk of health problems due to wildfire smoke are the elderly, pregnant women, people who smoke, young children and infants, people who walk outdoors, those involved in strenuous outdoor activities, and those who have chronic health conditions. However, it isn’t just those with risks who need to be concerned.

“During heavy smoke conditions, everyone is at risk regardless of their age or health, so we all need to be mindful,” said Dr. Enebeli.

While people may be spending time indoors when the air quality is poor, there are still things people should be keeping in mind.

“You want to close all outside windows and doors, including attached garage doors, and if you have an air conditioner you want to keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside,” Dr. Enebeli added.

Staying hydrated was something else that Dr. Enebeli said people should be doing. Along with the hydration needed to help deal with the heat, drinking lots of water can help keep the nose and mouth moist.

“As residents, we are also reminded not to use backyard fire pits or fire boxes in parks when the air quality is poor, Dr. Enebeli cautioned.

He also recommends keeping an eye out and checking on friends, family, and neighbours who may be susceptible to smoke.
