Construction on an expansion to Bill Robertson Park starts this week.

An accessible swing is being installed to the west of the existing playground, which is situated across from Seaman Stadium at 1400 North Railway Street.

The wheelchair-accessible swing was funded largely by a donation from the Rotary Club of Okotoks, totalling over $100,000, with the Town of Okotoks contributing about $10,000.

Along with the new swing, the playground's surfacing will also be replaced with infinity turf.

According to a release from the Town of Okotoks, the installation of the new feature began on Monday, and will take approximately a month to complete.

Some closures and disruptions can be expected between July 22 and August 23.

“Our members and supporters are thrilled to see this project finally come together after years of planning and fundraising,” said Jeff Foss, Rotary Club of Okotoks President.

“We have heard from parents of kids who use wheelchairs about the significant need for this accessible play space. We have observed steady usage of the current play structure, and this expansion will only enhance and improve its accessibility.”

This isn't the Rotary Club's first contribution to the park, as they donated funds for a picnic shelter to the town, which was installed in 2020.

More information on the accessible swing can be seen on the Town's website.
