The Weyburn Police Service was in need of a replacement phone for use by those who are in custody after an incident last Monday.

“On this occasion, we had an individual in custody and he was appearing before his lawyer, talking on the phone, and unfortunately for him, he didn’t like the answers he was receiving, and he ended up smashing the phone,” explained Police Chief Jamie Blunden. “So, he was charged with mischief under $5,000, and received a court date down the road.”

Blunden stressed that while the man wasn’t happy with how the conversation was going, you can’t take those frustrations out on property, “especially in the police station while you’re already in custody.”

Last week, the Weyburn Police Service responded to 49 calls for service. Those calls resulted in three charges under the Criminal Code – the mischief charge as well as two others for failing to comply with conditions of release or attending court as required. There were also 10 charges under the Traffic Safety Act.
