Many construction projects are underway around the city. Municipal engineer for the City of Weyburn, Renee Cugnet, says construction is far from slowing down.

The biggest current project is the road construction on First Avenue. They began at the intersection with Government Road to open traffic for highway thirty-five. The intersection is currently operating as a three-way stop until traffic signal lights can be installed.

The project is now moving toward Second Street.

“The section of roadway between Government Road and Second Street has been milled down and concrete work is currently taking place consisting of sections of curb and gutter and accessible pedestrian ramps before finishing with new asphalt. The underground infrastructure has been replaced at the Second Street intersection and that's temporarily opened back up for the main access to the hospital.”

Underground infrastructure replacements have been done at the intersection with Fifth Street and a structural rebuild has begun and is progressing to Tenth Street.

Construction is also present in other areas around the city. On Thirteenth Street and Sims Avenue, major road repairs were completed by GENCO.

Line painters were out and about last week. City Works crews also have projects in progress.

“The City Works crews are also currently working on hot asphalt road repairs throughout the city. Other ongoing construction also taking place includes contractor and City Works crews doing a combination of underground infrastructure work consisting of catch basin and storm drain replacements, sewer service repairs and valve hydrant and sanitary sewer maintenance.”

New projects are set to begin within the next month. Railway Avenue will see a water main replacement between Eighth and Tenth Street and complete repaving between Fifth to Tenth Street. Cugnet says major detours can be expected.

Major construction will also be present on Sixteenth Street.

“We’ll start the two blocks of storm line replacement between Coteau Ave and East Ave as well as later this year we will start on the traffic signal light replacement at Sixteenth Street and First Avenue intersection.”

With the upgrades happening around the city, Cugnet reminds people that the construction is temporary and ultimately will serve the community.

“The goal is to update our aging infrastructure. Obviously we have to start with the underground infrastructure first and then we can do road construction on top of the new underground infrastructure to have better roadways for the community.”

Cugnet also reminds drivers to be patient and respect work zones by obeying all signage and avoiding the area whenever possible.
