As Drowning Prevention Week unfolds from July 21st to 27th, the Lifesaving Society is urging residents to prioritize water safety.
Shelby Rushton, CEO of the Lifesaving Society's Saskatchewan Branch, emphasizes the critical need for precautions to prevent water-related accidents and fatalities.
“What’s really important to realize is that water can be a hazard, and that we need to take precautions. Things like wearing a life jacket, watching your kids around the water, and learning to swim are very important.”
Not wearing a life jacket, alcohol consumption, and cold water are among the leading causes of drowning.
“Most of the time, fatal drowning victims were found without a life jacket and quite often without one even in their boat,” said Rushton. “As well as alcohol, which continues to be a factor in the province. Just like driving a vehicle, driving a boat or swimming should not be done when you are impaired.”
She said people often underestimate the difficulty of swimming to safety after a fall. The risks increase with cold water, which can affect swimmers quickly. Rushton noted that when someone falls unexpectedly into cold water, they might take a quick breath, swallow, or inhale water, which can lead to drowning faster.
She stressed the importance of watching children around the water and learning how to swim. She also emphasized the importance of ensuring children know where the water boundaries are.
“You have to have direct supervision with your kids. If you have inflatable toys like big unicorns and orcas, make sure they stay within the boundary because those can drift away, and your kids could end up in deep water and in trouble.”
Rushton reiterated that the best way to keep kids safe is to keep a close eye on them, keep them within arm's reach, and always go with a friend or partner so someone is always watching the children.
She urged everyone to stay vigilant and proactive to ensure that a day at the water remains safe and enjoyable for all.
