Golden West’s third Taste of Summer Charity BBQ was a smokin' achievement, with the money raised going to Estevan’s Lion’s Club.

This week's gathering was held at Murray GM with Handy Andy's Mechanical providing food. The fundraising brought in $870, with the Estevan Lions Club Treasurer Nancy Brodeur explaining their upcoming project.

“We believe it’s really important to put permanent rink boards at Rusty Duce, and it will be a year-round facility."

With the upgrades, they hope to see the facility used for skating and hockey in the winter, and volleyball in the summer months.

Brodeur said they are excited to work on the project and hope the community is looking forward to the additions as well.

“It’s the biggest fundraiser that we’ve ever done and the biggest project we have ever done. We’ve always had community support, so I expect no less for this.”

She noted that the Lion’s Club is always looking to add new members to their ranks. “The members that we do have are all pretty much long-term members. We have had a couple of new ones in the last few years. Usually, if they come, they stay.”

Lion’s Club meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, from September to June, at the Nicholson Center. "So it's a 2-hour-a-month commitment plus whatever we do to serve in our community,"

The Lion’s Club will now be focusing on their lottery ticket sales, with the proceeds going towards the park upgrades.

Next week's Taste of Charity BBQ will hosted at Sholter Horseman Furniture and Appliance in Support of Saskabilities.
