With the heatwaves we have been experiencing in the Foothills many of us have been cooling off in our rivers.

While it's a great, free way to cool down, High River's Fire Chief Cody Zebedee reminds us about a few simple things to stay safe.

"We've seen lots and lots of people using the river in this heat. And I just like to remind people to be using PFDs."

PFD is a personal floatation device, in other words, a life jacket and to ensure it's properly fitted for your height and weight.

Zebedee also cautions "if they were to get stuck into a tree or some of the other hazards that are in our river that you may not see. And again, with those changing water levels, things could change from day to day too."

The fire chief's last piece of good advice is to let someone know where and when you're going as well as when you're expected to be done and to have fun, stay cool but be safe.
