A newly recruited family physician is now available to provide care to Red Deer and area residents.

Dr. Gerhard Louwrens is working out of Horizon Family Medicine and will also be providing hospitalist and long-term care coverage at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

“It’s a pleasure to announce the addition of Dr. Louwrens to Red Deer and the Central Zone medical team to help care for local residents,” said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Dr. Louwrens and his family are a welcome addition to Red Deer, and he is sure to be a great asset to our community.”

Horizon Family Medicine now has 17 physicians serving the community.

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” said Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

Louwrens received his medical education at the University of Pretoria and practiced in South Africa for 10 years. In his leisure time, he enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, braai (South African barbecue), camping, and watching sports.

Individuals needing a family doctor can call 403-342-7270 to arrange a meet-and-greet appointment.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit physicians across the Central Zone to meet community needs.

AHS has physician resource planners who are working to pursue international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They are working closely with various community partners and organizations, such as the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
