Estevan Minor Baseball (EMB) has been busy over the last few weeks, hosting five provincial tournaments over two consecutive weekends.
“Everything was on schedule, everybody had fun, and everybody liked the diamonds. All the out-of-town teams liked the city; everything was perfect,” said Mel Murray, Vice President of Estevan Minor Baseball, noting that the kids know how to play good, entertaining baseball.
Reflecting on the conclusion of the tournaments, and season Murray mentioned, “Now that it’s over, maybe a little sad because there is no more ball going on. Also relieved because it was a hectic last two weeks; we were pretty busy.”
Murray emphasized the importance of volunteers within the organization, stating that without their help over the last few weeks and throughout the season, things would not have run as smoothly. Volunteers took care of scorekeeping, raffle tables, maintaining the diamonds, and many other roles.
With the tournaments concluded, EMB is now taking August to rest up. “A lot of people go on holiday, so we won’t get together until probably September to discuss what’s going on for next year and what improvements we want to make,” Murray explained. “Basically, I’m just cleaning up over the next couple of days and locking everything up.”
The group will gather at the end of August for their award ceremony. “Just before school goes back, we have awards for every league and every house team, like most improved and best sportsmanship. We give out quite a few awards to all the kids,” Murray said.
In the fall, EMB will hold its annual general meeting, where the board of directors will be voted on. “Hopefully, some new board members will step up, and we will see what happens,” Murray noted.
The 2024 season is nearing its end. “It’s wrapped up for the season for most of the teams, but the 18U AA team is going to Westerns, which will be a great opportunity for Estevan,” Murray said. “It’s going to be the best teams from each province competing, so it’s going to be good baseball. I believe our U18 team will handle themselves really well,” he concluded.
