With the kids still off from school for another month, there's no better time than now for families to bond with a new pet, and beginning today, spayed or neutered cats and dogs can be adopted from the Weyburn Humane Society's animal shelter for $50.

Shelter Manager Colleen Morrice said the shelter is currently at capacity, and while spayed and neutered cats are always available at this rate, there are about 14 medium to large sized dogs who qualify for this special rate.

"We're just hoping for them to get homes," she shared. "The kids are home from school for August, and hopefully you can get an animal that fits into your lifestyle for 'furever' homes."

The shelter offers a two-week trial period in the event of an adoption not working out.

"So you have 14 days and you can bring that dog back for a full refund," explained Morrice. "The reason we have the 14 days is other dogs might come in during that time and take the spot, but you're guaranteed your spot for the next 14 days and pretty much an animal has decompressed and everything in that 14 days, so you know if it is a fit for your family or not."

She reminds those considering adoption to also budget for veterinarian costs for vaccination, as well as food, and other essentials for their care.
