Another heat warning has been issued for Weyburn, and the surrounding areas, as temperatures are again expected to reach 32° and warmer over the next few days.

“The criteria for a heat warning is two days, that’s two consecutive days of a high of 32 and an overnight low of 16 or greater,” explained Peter Kimbell. He is a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada. “So, we’re going to get to 32° today. The low tonight is 16°. We’ll be at 35° tomorrow.”

The run for the next two days does justify the warning, but then the overnight low for tomorrow and Friday could see an end to the warning, with the temperature dipping to 14° tomorrow night, and 13° Friday night.

While the temperatures will be in the 30s, it won’t feel as hot as it did last week, when we saw temperatures getting into the high 30s, and the humidex into the 40s. This will be due to the humidity not being as high.

This heatwave, though, will be short-lived. Things are expected to be seasonal over the weekend, then nearly 15 degrees cooler for the start of next week.

“It will be dropping down to a high of 24° on Monday, a high of 22° next Tuesday, so it is going to feel much cooler to start next week.”

In terms of precipitation, it doesn’t look likely Weyburn will see any as the temperature shifts to start the new month. Weyburn saw around 30 millimetres in June, and there isn’t a lot of precipitation in store in the short term.

“We can hope for better things maybe next week, but in the short term, not much,” Kimbell added.

The meteorologist also recommended people follow precautions during the heatwave, including watching for heat-related illnesses, drinking lots of water, and checking in on friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable in extreme heat. As well, he recommended scheduling outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day and avoiding direct sun exposure.
