The Weyburn Beavers carried the momentum from their win at home Tuesday into Regina last night and came away with a big win over the Red Sox. Thanks in part to a seven-run 4th inning, which included a grand slam from River Smith, the Beavers beat the Red Sox 14-11.
Weyburn opened the game with three runs in the 1st inning, with Halen Otte and Ian Heck driving in runs, and Otte then scoring himself on a play near the end of the inning. Regina would respond, though, with three runs of their own.
Weyburn would take the lead in the 2nd inning before Regina took the lead themselves in the bottom of the 3rd. Then, the Beavers would open the floodgates in the 4th.
The big inning would see 12 at-bats for the Beavers, as they went around the order and then some. The scoring started when Ryan Dauphinee drove in a run with a single to left, scoring Dallas Cummins. Then, a sacrifice fly to right field by Halen Otte brought home Easton Mould, and the score was tied 6-6.
With bases loaded, Robert Gurney would be hit by a pitch, letting Dauphinee cross home plate. The bases would still be loaded for River Smith. With a full count and two out, Smith would put the ninth pitch of the at-bat over the fence for his first home run of the season, and a grand slam that put Weyburn up 11-6.
Regina would get one of the runs back in the bottom of the 4th, but then a balk would allow the Beavers to score another run in the top of the 5th. Regina responded again, this time with two runs, and it was 12-9 after five innings.
The two teams would exchange runs in the 6th inning to make it 13-10, and again in the 7th inning, which would finish off the scoring for the night.
At the plate, Dauphinee would collect three hits and is now two away from the Beavers career record. There is a good chance he could end up setting the record tonight as the Beavers take on the Swift Current 57s at Tom Laing Park.
Smith finished the game with 5 RBIs, four of them coming courtesy of the grand slam. Otte had two RBIs in the win, with Dauphinee, Heck, Gurney and Mould also driving in a run each.
On the mound, Matty Rocheleau got the win. He came into the game in the 4th inning and pitched for two. Owen McConnel had the start in the game, and went for 3 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing seven runs, five earned. Ethan Webster pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of the game, striking out three, and allowing one run.
The Beavers return home, where they have now won three in a row, against the 57s tonight. The first pitch at Tom Laing Park is just after 7 p.m.
