Many parents' hearts skip a beat when they see young kids or teens jumping off the Centre Street bridge in High River.

While it certainly looks dangerous, High River Fire Chief Cody Zebedee says it's not illegal.

"The Town of High River does not have a bylaw against jumping off of the bridge however it is one of those things that we don't encourage given that the water depth changes rapidly. We could see flow changes depending on weather conditions and things like that."

But it most certainly is dangerous.

"Not knowing what's on the bottom of the river, has someone thrown a bike over or other debris, as you're jumping off maybe landing on it, not knowing what you're getting into."

You may have seen teens jumping off the irrigation channel structure, and that is illegal. There are 'No Trespassing' signs posted.

Zebedee also wanted to remind residents that they can't impede traffic or pedestrians.

"We just ask that people if they are on the bridge to make sure that they are being respectful and allowing people to pass through on the pathway and not impeding any traffic as there is the potential for fines for impeding traffic."

High River and the Foothills area are currently under a Heat Warning.
