Paving began Thursday.

The intent is still to have a section of Winkler's North Railway Avenue back in circulation in time for Harvest Festival next weekend, despite a hiccup in its reconstruction.

Crews had to go outside of the original scope of the project and redo the road base, forcing a delay in the roads re-opening.

"We did have to rebuild a good portion of the base," explained Mayor Henry Siemens. "We ran into a very wet spring and that raised the water table, affecting the base in that area and we had to redo it."

All of that work is now complete, added Siemens, and crews began paving the surface from Highway 32 to Main Street on Thursday.

For the many businesses along that stretch that have been affected by the closed road, the end is in sight.

"We have worked very closely with each one of those businesses. They knew when we were going to go in. We provided some alternatives that met their short term needs," said Siemens. "As we've run further into this and it being delayed, we've had ongoing conversations with them, we've be able to grant access at times for trucks to get in and make deliveries.

It is a very disruptive thing to have this street in front of your business taken out, so we recognize that," added Siemens. "We've worked closely with the businesses in that area to minimize that as much as possible."

Once complete, the Mayor says there will be a tremendous street in front of these businesses but admits it will have been a long road to get there.
