Around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, a hailstorm swept through High River lasting for approximately 15 minutes.
Many of the hail stones were the size of golf balls and many were made of ice.
Many leaves were left strewn across the town and some branches also came down.
Some people driving vehicles were forced to pull over due to the intensity and power of the hail.
Environment Canada earlier issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch on Friday night and reissued one Saturday:
Watches
Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for:
- Foothills Co. near High River and Aldersyde
Thunderstorms will continue to develop this evening. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
