The Saskatchewan Roughriders had a chance to move into sole possession of the West Division on Saturday but surprised by the Edmonton Elks

with 42-31 loss.

Despite scoring on the opening play of the game with a kickoff return from Mario Alford, the Roughriders were unable to maintain the momentum.

Former Roughriders receiver Tevin Jones in his start with Edmonton came back to haunt his old team with three catches for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns,

Javon Leake started at running back for Edmonton for the injured Kevin Brown and took advantage of the opportunity with 126 yards rushing with three touchdowns.

In his first start of the season, Elks QB Tre Ford had 252 passing yards with 46 rushing yards.

Saskatchewan RB Frankie Hickson had 89 rushing yards while Keesean Johnson led Saskatchewan receivers with 72 yards.

Riders QB Shea Patterson had 306 passing yards including a touchdown pass to Mitch Picton on the final play of the game.

The Green and white and BC are 5-3 which is good for first place in the West, but Calgary (4-4) is now only two points back with Winnipeg (3-6) trailing by four points.

Saskatchewan heads to Ottawa on Thursday on a short week.

Shea Patterson will likely start as Trevor Harris has begun practicing but will likely finish his stint on the six-game injured list this week.

Among the other Roughriders who didn't practice on Monday included RB AJ Ouellette (Hip), LB Jameer Thurman (elbow), WR Keesean Johnson (Head), OL Ryan Sceviour (Elbow)
