Every farmer needs a reliable business partner. Managing the many moving parts of your farm can take up time – but when you have a reliable supplier like Horizon Fertilizers Ltd., your day just gets that much easier.
Horizon Fertilizers Manager, Gary Pappenfoot, has been working with farmers in the province since 1989. Originally starting in Humboldt, Bruno, and Lake Lenore, Horizon Fertilizers added a location in Cudworth in 2009, as well as a standalone anhydrous ammonia site in Watson in 1999. Gary explains, “Dave Wuchner and I had been working at the Humboldt Flour Mills here in Humboldt for a number of years. Sask Wheat Pool bought Humboldt Flour Mills out in May of 1998, but facing big changes and uncertainty, we left to join Horizon Fertilizers just across the tracks shortly after. We bought into Horizon in 1999 and have been there growing the business ever since.”
Over time, additional partners Chris Yungmann, Joel Hamoline, and most recently, Landon Lefebvre joined the ownership/management team. Horizon is also very proud of their dedicated, hard-working staff who make their success possible. Some have been with Horizon over 25 years! As an ag retail business, Horizon sells dry and liquid fertilizers, anhydrous ammonia, canola, forage, and turf seeds, and a wide range of crop protection products. “We offer the widest range of crop input products and services in our trading area, which is roughly a 100-kilometer radius around Humboldt,” says Gary.
In addition to products, they also offer a wide range of services that are essential to farmers in the area. These services include field scouting, custom aerial applications through Clayton Air, on-farm delivery for crop protection, fertilizer, and seed, rental equipment delivery, and crop protection barrels, totes, and jug recycling. Recycling is convenient not only for the customers, but for the environment as well. Gary explains, “So we charge a deposit on the totes, $100 to $600 depending on the size. We’ll take back bigger sized totes and return the deposit, and those totes get sent back to be refilled. For small empty jugs, we give customers large plastic bags that hold about 60 or 70 jugs, depending on the jug size. Curtis Construction picks them up periodically, and they recycle them into products like plastic fence posts and parking lot wheel stops.”
In addition to being an Ag Retailer, they’re also a Flaman rental dealer and a Traeger BBQ dealer. “We became the first independent Flaman rental dealer outside of the Flaman family stores back in 2003,” says Gary. “We rent out enclosed, flat deck trailers, and dump trailers as well as farm equipment like post pounders, grain bag extractors, grain vacs, and high speed and breaking disks.” They also sell tow straps, receivers, and balls for when you’re picking up your rentals. Gary continues, “We added the Traeger line of pellet grills and BBQs in 2003. We’re a Platinum Traeger dealer and offer the full product line of Traeger grills, parts, and service, one of very few in the province.”
As we move into harvest season, it’s more important than ever for farmers to have someone like Horizon Fertilizers on their side. When you need a hand, they’ll be there for you in Humboldt, Bruno, Cudworth, and Lake Lenore. Find them online here.
