The Alberta RCMP is reminding new drivers to be careful on the road.

"Learning to drive can be fun and overwhelming. As a new driver there’s lots to keep in mind while navigating the roadways," the Alberta RCMP stated in a media release from August 6th.

Due to their age and inexperience, drivers under the age of 25 are more likely to be involved in either fatal collisions or collisions that cause injury than any other age group.

Even though the number of young and new drivers involved in fatal and injury-causing collisions has dropped, the RCMP is reminding young drivers to follow several safety tips to help keep everyone safe.

Those tips include staying off phones and other devices while driving, be aware of the surroundings, don't tailgate, only pass when it is safe to do so, be mindful of everyone else on the road, keep an eye out for motorcycles and bicycles, and make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.

Those with either a learner's permit or a probationary license must always have someone with a valid Class 5 licence.

On top of that, the RCMP is reminding everyone that the posted speed limit is for ideal conditions, and if the road conditions are not ideal, it's advised to slow down.

And with highways generally being busier during the summertime, it's advised to take a bit of extra time to reach the destination.

"Driving for the first time can be nerve wracking, be patient with new drivers."
