After another summer of voracious reading at South Central Regional Library (SCRL), it’s time to celebrate with a familiar favourite — Shark Tale.

Abby Storey and Natalie Rach, summer programmers at the Morden Library, say the summer reading program (called the Bookland Explorers) will finish with a movie that fits the under-the-sea theme of the group.

Over the past few months, the pair has been working with children in the community to grow and record their love of reading, from counting hours and reading with children to running the program’s prize table. They have also organized crafts and activities throughout the summer.

“I think for me, [my favourite part] is building relationships with kids,” says Rach. “I want to be a teacher, so it's the perfect job for me. I like talking to kids and helping them read and do crafts and [things] like that.”

Storey says that she also enjoys doing crafts with the children and spending time with them. With the end of summer reading in sight, the two are turning their attention to the movie event tomorrow (August 7th).

The event is sponsored by the Morden Elks, of which Henry Penner is a member.

“[I]t was a program that we thought just fit our bill,” he says. “I sent an e-mail to our lodge, which [is] about 80 members, and I got the response, ‘my kid’s in that program and it's really good!’”

Penner says that the reputation of the reading program led all the lodge members to heartily support sponsoring its movie event at Stardust Drive-In.

Free tickets to see Shark Tale are available at the Morden Library. The library is open from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The movie at Stardust Drive-In begins at dusk, approximately 9:30 p.m., and the concession stand will be open with snacks for purchase.

The Bookland Explorers program, for ages 3-12, happens every summer at the SCRL branches. The final deadline for counting reading minutes and acquiring tickets is August 17th.
