Special Olympics Weyburn received a Community Fund Grant from the Weyburn Credit Union in June for the purchase of some new bowling shirts.

"It's well overdue because we didn't even have enough shirts for them to compete at the last tournament. There was one or two that didn't even get a shirt to wear. So that's unfortunate. But so now we're set for the next season and moving forward for the few years," shared Community Manager Joanne Paxman.

She said the sport starts back up again in October, and with their recent call for new board members, they also have been seeking more volunteers to help facilitate at the bowling alley.

"So it's just coming to the lanes between 4 and 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, once bowling starts, and just helping them. Maybe they need their help tying their shoes. Maybe they need help with the ball before they throw. Picking the balls up, cheering them on."

Paxman said cheering on the athletes is the most important part of helping out with their bowling program.

"I guarantee if you try it once, if you come down and even just watch, you'll be back, because it's a lot of fun, and the athletes love it."

Currently, Special Olympics Weyburn is only able to offer two sports for their athletes, bowling and swimming. However, once they acquire more board members and more volunteers, they hope to start a bocci program.

"Usually what happens is the ones that do bowling will do bocci, and there'll be some that just wanna do bocci. But some will just want bocci or floor hockey or we were talking about getting basketball going. So that's what we're looking at for the future."
