The Bar U Ranch has been around since 1883 and is now a National Historic Site showcasing the ranch's role in Canadian ranching history.

The Ranch is down along Highway 22 and Highway 540, just outside of Longview, and each August the Bar U Ranch hosts an Old Time Ranch Rodeo.

This year's rodeo will take place on Sunday, August 18th.

At that rodeo, contestants will be competing in several different events, such as Team Branding, Team Sorting, Team Doctoring, and Stray Roping, which are all things cowboys and cowgirls would've had to do while working on the Ranch.

For the Team Doctoring event, Bar U Ranch's Visitor Experience Officer Sandra Codd says the participants have to know how to do certain tasks in regard to the cattle's health if they want to participate in this event.

"Once a calf gets caught in a fence or a mama cow gets caught in a fence or mama cow's having trouble having a calf. So, ranchers have to be versed in how to look after these things," Codd explains. "They are timed events, and they have to do certain things for the event. Whatever is set out by the judges."

Codd says she has photos of the Old Time Ranch Rodeo dating back to 2001, and it is hosted by the Friends of the Bar U Historic Ranch Association.

On top of the rodeo events, there will also be the Pekisko Creek Market and a food truck onsite.

The market will open at 10 a.m. and the rodeo begins at 1 p.m., with the entire day wrapping up around 5 p.m.

"It's great fun. It's about 15 teams that come and do this and we normally get anywhere between 800 to 1000 people. It's quite anĀ event."

Admission for the rodeo is covered under the Parks Canada Discovery Pass, but for those who don't have a Discovery Pass, it costs $13.25 for adults, and $11.25 for seniors, and it's free for anyone under the age of 17.
