Finally, 4th Street SW in Altona is getting resurfaced. Motorists have spent a few years navigating potholes and other eroded sections of the street where rainwater tends to collect.

On Wednesday morning, crews got to work milling down the uneven road, preparing it for a new surface.

According to Public Works Manager, Clint Derksen, the finished product is expected to last 20 years. The only exception is the north end of the street, which was in the worst condition. There, this mill and fill work is considered a short-term (5-10 years), yet necessary, solution to extend the life of that area until the final phase of the Town's southwest drainage project is complete and better alleviates standing water on the road.

The project is part of the town's million-dollar road improvement program that continues to progress throughout the community.

At the park, crews began milling down the west half of the parking loop on Tuesday, preparing it for a new surface as well.

In an update submitted to PembinaValleyOnline, Derksen noted, Maple Leaf Construction's concrete crew has so far completed all of the jobs that were in the original scope of work, plus some other small fixes that came up.

The excavation crew is preparing a few water and sewer break road repairs that are getting done while the paver is in town, and as mentioned, the milling crew is hard at work prepping all of the various areas for the paving crew that is scheduled to arrive late this week or next.

The expectation remains that work throughout town will be done by the end of summer.
