The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) and SaskTel are taking the first steps to transition to the next generation of 9-1-1 services.
Saskatchewan is set to become the first province to transition all of its primary 9-1-1 communication centres to the New Generation 9-1-1 in compliance with a new federal mandate.
Once the multi-year, multimillion-dollar project is completed, Saskatchewan’s Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) will offer multiple ways for the public to communicate with 9-1-1 and provide enhanced features to provide emergency services with more informed and safer responses.
The new technology will help enable the answering points to expand their capabilities in the upcoming years. This includes allowing the public to share text messages, videos and photos through the 9-1-1 system in future years.
Funding for the project is being provided through 9-1-1 service fees.
The SPSA and SaskTel are continuing to work with secondary PSAPs to have their technology upgraded by the end of March 2025.
