Saskatchewan was treated to a breathtaking display as the Perseid meteor shower coincided with a vibrant aurora borealis over Grasslands National Park. The rare celestial event transformed the dark prairie skies creating a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
The Perseid meteor shower, known for its high rate of shooting stars, reached its peak over the weekend. As Earth passed through the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, meteors zipped across the sky, leaving trails behind. But this year, the Perseids were not the only stars of the show.
Grasslands National Park, known for its vast, unspoiled prairies and dark skies, provided the perfect backdrop for the event. The park, located in the heart of Saskatchewan, is one of the few places in Canada where light pollution is minimal, allowing for unobstructed views of the night sky.
For those fortunate enough to witness it in person, the experience was nothing short of magical. One visitor said, “You couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder watching."
With the Perseid meteor shower gracing the skies through the end of August and the northern lights in full swing for a few days there’s no better time to look up and appreciate the beauty of the sky above.
