With the upcoming school year quickly approaching, young students have the chance to learn about school bus safety during the annual First Rider program.   

School divisions including Chinook’s Edge, Red Deer Public, Red Deer Catholic, and Wild Rose School Division along with Prairie Bus Lines will have coordinators and staff members at each participating location to teach students about bus safety. 

Students will get to watch a school bus safety video, learn how to ride the bus safely when the bus is moving, practice safely entering and exiting a bus, experience a short bus ride, and participate in an emergency evacuation.   

First Rider will be offered from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:  

  • Red Deer & area – Aug. 13 École Secondaire Notre Dame High School parking lot  

  • Olds & area - Aug. 14 École Deer Meadow School parking lot  

  • Rocky Mountain House & area -  Aug. 21 West Central High School / St. Dominic High School  

  • Drayton Valley & area - Aug. 22 Frank Maddock High School
