With a shift to northwesterly winds, much of Saskatchewan is under an Air Quality Advisory this morning.
“With those winds have come a shifting of the smoke plumes from the wildfires in the northern Prairies,” explained Brad Vrolijk, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“That’s sort of fumigating southern Saskatchewan with a lot of smoke that’s been trapped up north over the last week or so.”
He said that there’s an initial wave of dense smoke this morning, and while there might be an improvement in conditions towards that later part of the morning, a second plume is expected to make its way south.
“Right now, that plume is up north of Prince Albert and Meadow Lake, and it will descend towards Saskatoon this morning, and then continue its way southward, reaching the Trans Canada corridor from Swift Current to Regina by mid-to-late afternoon.”
If you’re able to stay inside, it is recommended that you do so. “If you do need to be outside, you could consider wearing a mask of some sort to help filter the smoke. Or be outside in short breaks and get inside and breathe cleaner air as much as you can.”
Conditions along the Trans Canada corridor should see some improvement overnight tonight.
“We may see some continued smoky weather throughout the weekend, but it will really be this initial wave that’s very bad.”
