With the big draw date nearing soon, the Weyburn Humane Society is making a push for ticket sales for their vehicle raffle. Volunteers will have the 2024 GMC Terrain parked at the corner of Souris Avenue and Government Road this Friday, August 16th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they'll be selling raffle tickets and mini-donuts.

Shelter Manager Colleen Morrice said the cost of the vehicle still hasn't been covered by what they've sold so far.

"We're about halfway there. We still haven't paid off the vehicle and the Raffle Box with the amount of tickets sold, but we're all very confident that the last-minute buyers, which seems to be Weyburn, that we will have a successful raffle."

She said the last-minute issue left some missing out on last year's draw.

"I sold tickets right up till midnight the night before and had people calling after midnight, but unfortunately they couldn't get the tickets," explained Morrice. "So it would be great if people would just buy the tickets now and not have that last-minute rush."

The vehicle is parked most often at the corner of Railway Avenue and Third Street, in the parking lot of RONA. However, it hasn't moved around as much this year due to the WHS's current shortage of volunteers.

"We thought we were going to have a barbecue and stuff, but I don't know if we have the manpower for it," she noted. "Unfortunately, with me working in a shelter to try to save cost on staffing, we are not having as many events this summer as we usually do the barbecues and stuff like that I would organize, but I just haven't."

Morrice said they hope to be able to park the vehicle in the lot at Barber Motors during the last week leading up to the draw, which will be made on August 24th at 1 p.m. at Barber Motors. Ticket sales end at 10 a.m. that day.

So far, due to the volunteer shortage, the usual barbecue for that event is currently part of the plan. "I'll probably bring in some puppies, probably not kitties, but a couple of dogs for sure."

"We're so excited for that draw," she added. "So if we can get people to buy those tickets within this next week, that would be fantastic, and then we kind of know where we stand with the vehicle."
