The Red Deer RCMP is advising residents of Quick Response (QR) code scams.

When the codes are scanned, it brings the user to a website that contains malware, that can obtain banking and other sensitive information.

Police say when a member of the public received a package of luxury goods they had not ordered, there was an attached note directing them to scan the QR code.

Fraudsters also place QR codes on top of authentic ones.

The RCMP are now reminding the community to be mindful of QR codes and only scan codes that you are sure are authentic.

Red Deer RCMP encourages the public to visit The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to familiarize themselves with the many different types of scams.

If you have fallen victim to this or any other scam, please contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
