An investigation into a cyber attack at the University of Winnipeg has officially been closed.

The cyber incident first came to the attention of the school on March 25, and an investigation was launched immediately.

By April 4, the institution learned that data, including personal information, had been stolen.

"It is disturbing that higher education institutions, like the University and other public sector organizations, are being targeted by cyber attacks," said the school in a statement. "This has been a terrible incident that has directly impacted our community."

A list of groups likely affected was shared on the University website, with those listed being provided with a two-year credit monitoring service.

The investigation has now closed, and the list has been updated to include more people likely affected by the attack. They include students at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate between 2018-2022, and graduates in 2008-2009, 2011-2013 and 2018. Honour nominees were also impacted, including Distinguished Alumni award nominees from 2017 to March 2024.

Anyone included in the list who has not already received two years of credit monitoring can request it.

"We are grateful to the staff members who worked many long hours to restore systems following the attack, as well as to our entire UWinnipeg community for their patience and understanding through this challenge," said the University of Winnipeg. "Rest assured that we are carefully considering the results of our investigation and are emerging from this incident with stronger cyber defences."
