An event coming to Weyburn this weekend after two decades: Arm Wars, an arm wrestling event at the Weyburn Legion will give anyone the chance to compete.
Arm Wars CFO, Dennis Vallier, said you don't even need to have experience, as it's mostly physics.
"I've seen my buddy Mike, he's about 150 some odd pounds and he beat a guy that was 80 or 90 pounds heavier than him, but it's all about just staying as tight as you can to your body and keeping good form," he said. "You want to have a nice high rise and you want to use as much physics as you can to your advantage. Use all your body weight."
Vallier shared about his first arm wrestling experience.
"I wasn't even planning it. I was just coaching a buddy when I went, and he said, 'well, I'll pay for it if you go in', so I said, 'oh, I'll go in, I guess', and I actually won gold the first time without ever entering. So it was kind of interesting. I got into it pretty good after that. So some people just have the technique, so definitely don't be afraid to show up and try."
Based on the feedback he and fellow organizer, Michael Gass, have heard, an event like this hasn't taken place in Weyburn in about 20 years.
"It really died off a little bit, but it's kind of making a comeback now with Devon Larrett, and a few guys are moving around online and making some noise online and making some noise."
Vallier said early weigh-ins will be held on Friday, August 23rd, from 7 to 9 p.m., with another weigh-in before the tournament from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday the 24th, with the tournament set to begin at 1 p.m.
With no age limit, anyone can join in on the competition. The youngest class is nine and under, then the next youth class is 13 and under, followed by 14 to 18 boys and 14 to 18 girls classes.
"Women's and men's classes go all the way up to 100-kilogram plus," he stated. "It's a double elimination tournament, so that means everybody who enters gets to arm wrestle at least twice."
Entry for $30 for adults, and $10 for youth.
"Other than that, there's no fee for anybody to come and watch and spectate," he added. "There's food and drinks provided by the Legion there, so everyone should be well fed."
The event is backed by the Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling Association, with any proceeds from the event being put back into the organization.
