Rocky Mountain House Mayor, Debbie Baich has resigned.

She took to social media to announce her resignation on Aug. 13.

“After much consideration, for my family and my health, I have decided to resign from office effective immediately. My values and ideals do not align with the majority of council and I have irreconcilable differences with the CAO Dean Krause,” she said. “Given the current circumstances, there is no way to continue forward in a positive and constructive way. In particular, I am concerned with the direction that council is taking and that the ongoing conflict within council and with the CAO reflects negatively on our community and hurts our potential for economic development both with existing businesses and future investors.”

Following Baich’s resignation, deputy mayor Marley Capraro has been appointed as acting mayor.

During Tuesday’s (Aug. 20) council meeting, councillor Ken Moesker was appointed as deputy mayor until Oct. 31.

Following Baich’s resignation, council must hold a by-election to fill the vacant spot on council, unless an extension is approved by municipal affairs.

Council agreed to direct administration to draft a letter to Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver, requesting a by-election extension to the next general election.
