UPDATE: As of 2:02 p.m. Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southeast area.

Environment Canada is sending out a warning that severe weather is on the approach and people should keep their eyes out for that.

On their thunderstorm outlook, the southeast is seeing a system that is in the high weather threat category.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang talks about that incoming system.

"We know today just the way the atmosphere works that all the elements are kind of coming together for a severe weather type of day. So we are expecting storms there, it looks like it's going to be kind of a later start, late afternoon, evening, even into the night for these thunderstorms and all the elements are there and all forms of severe weather on the table, meaning heavy rains, hails, possible strong winds, and even the possibility of a tornado today."

With that strong weather on the way, Lang advises people to keep tuned in to various sources that can give updates on the weather.

"We're asking folks to be extra aware of the weather going on today and have a way of receiving watches and warnings, be it on your phone, there's a couple of apps that are really good for that. Weather Can app and the Sask Alert app are good for receiving warnings. So either on your phone, TV, radio, just a way that if you receive those warnings you can get them and know how to act appropriately."

Discover Estevan will have any weather updates as they become available, with notifications being sent out over the Discover Estevan app.

Lang urges people to stay cautious both through the later part of the day and overnight.

"Just be safe out out there today. The storms are probably going to go into the night as well and we are expecting quite a bit of activity into the night as well."
