As the Paralympics draw near, Midale is proudly adorned with posters of Keely Shaw, the local cyclist who will carry their spirit to the Games.
“It’s a real honour to have somebody represent us from our town and be in the public eye like that,” said Midale Mayor Allan Halgulm.
He noted that Midale has a strong sports community, with hockey, fastball, and intramural sports being an integral part of the town's makeup.
Halgulm emphasized the importance of supporting local athletes from a young age. “They live in your community and what makes your community is your youth.”
In a previous interview with Discover Estevan Shaw reflected on her hometown "I always feel that rush of pride whenever I head back home to Southern Sask. I know the whole province is behind me and I feel that when I'm on the start line."
This will be Shaw's second Paralympic Games, with her first being in Tokyo. The games kick off on August 28, with Shaw's first event set for August 29. She will take part in a 500-meter time trial, followed by the 3-kilometer individual pursuit, a time trial will then take place on the road on September 4, and a road race on September 6.
