Manitoba'sĀ Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an interaction between an adult male and an on-duty Winkler Police Service officer.

According to a news release issued by the IIU Wednesday, on August 21st Winkler Police Service notified the IIU of a complaint received July 14th.

The complaint was made by a man who reported an on-duty officer made threatening comments toward him while at a restaurant in Winkler around 4 a.m. on July 14th.

It was noted in the release, the civilian director of the IIU has determined it is in the public interest to investigate.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU atĀ 1-844-667-6060.

The investigation is ongoing, so no further details will be provided at this time by the IIU.

"I am unable to comment on specifics of the incident at this time," indicated Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt in a statement provided to PembinaValleyOnline. "As is normal practice, the Independent Investigation Unit will do a complete and thorough investigation to determine if there was any wrongdoing by our officer, and we will cooperate in any way we can."
