The Estevan TaeKwon-Do Club is gearing up for the new season, with classes set to begin on September 5.
Wayne Brown, a 7th-degree master and head instructor for Estevan TaeKwon-Do , shared that the season is divided into two sessions. Each session consists of 32 classes, with the first session running from September to January and the second session continuing until the end of May.
The upcoming season offers classes for various age groups. Children aged eight to 13 will have classes on Mondays and Thursdays at Spruce Ridge School from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Older students, aged 14 and up, including those over 60, will have classes on the same days from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
For younger children aged five to seven, a mini-class begins on October 3. “At that age, they’re learning to run, jump, have fun, and we incorporate some of the movements, so they have an idea and get a bit of training,” Brown explained. “If you’ve been in minis for three years, you have a lot more skills and are ready to join the formal class.”
“The truth is, at that age, they should be having fun—not that we don’t have fun in the children’s and adults’ classes, but it’s more formalized and disciplined,” he added.
Brown noted that the club has been a part of the Estevan community for 38 years and has received strong support. Last year, the club had around 70 students, and Brown mentioned that the numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
The club will participate in various tournaments throughout the year, culminating in a provincial championship in May 2025, which will involve all the Global TaeKwon-Do Federation groups in Saskatchewan. Approximately nine clubs are expected to compete at the provincial level.
