Lacombe Pride Weekend celebrations kicked off today (Aug. 23) with a 2-Spirit flag raising ceremony at the Michener House Museum.

The flag raising ceremony was in partnership between the Lacombe Pride Society and the Lacombe Museums.

Jonathan Luscombe, Lacombe Pride Society executive director explained that it was important to begin Pride Weekend with the flag raising ceremony as an act of reconciliation.

“The partnership with the Lacombe Museum reiterates that this is a safe space, Lacombe is meant just as much for you as it is for anyone else that lives here,” Luscombe said. “The flag represents that when we come together, it doesn't matter the significance of the past, we can reconcile, move forward, and make a Lacombe that is for everyone.”

Samantha Lee, Lacombe Museums Community Engagement Coordinator said the museum is proud to support the Lacombe Pride Society, and kicking off the weekend is a privilege.

Lee explained that the three Lacombe Museums buildings are inclusive spaces to staff and the public, to talk, and ask questions.

“We represent historical places. We're here to talk about the past even if it’s difficult, or hard things that have happened,” she said. “Having a building like this, we definitely grapple with the more difficult parts of history.”

Luscombe is hopeful that everyone who attends Pride Weekend events and activities has a sense of belonging in the community.

“When people have that sense of belonging and representation, they feel like they can be themselves and can add to society and our city just as much as anyone else,” they said. “This event marks an official moment where it doesn't matter where you come from or who you are, you can add to the beauty of Lacombe.”
