The Wolf Creek Public Schools is preparing to pilot the new draft kindergarten to Grade 6 social studies curriculum this upcoming school year.

On Aug. 22, the Wolf Creek Public Schools Board of Trustees received a report on the pilot program, that has nearly 20 teachers from seven schools participating.

The pilot will be supported by online professional development sessions provided by Alberta Education, along with in-person and virtual PD sessions led by the Education Services team.

The PD sessions will focus on assessment resource development and sharing.

Education Services Coordinators Kaylene Reddekopp and Korey Von Kuster will lead the pilot, ensuring teachers have the necessary support and resources throughout the process.

The draft social studies curriculum was developed through consultation with education partners, teachers, and parents with a focus on building students’ critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, and engage students in learning that promotes understanding of diversity.

Since the draft social studies curriculum was released in April, 62 school authorities and more than 1,700 teachers across 429 schools have signed up to pilot the curriculum during the 2024/2025 school year.

“I am incredibly pleased with the number of school authorities and teachers piloting the draft social studies curriculum this school year,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education. “I look forward to continued collaboration with school leaders and teachers as we continue our work to build a comprehensive curriculum that builds students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and inspires a passion for learning.”
