After going for an extended period without a lot of precipitation in the Weyburn area, the past week has seen three thunderstorms move through that has brought quite a bit of rain just as farmers get into the field for harvest.

It all started last Wednesday, when a storm dumped 33 millimetres of rain on Weyburn, with some areas around the city also receiving hail. The hail was reported in some areas as being as big as a golf ball.

This storm was followed up by another one that came through the southeast in the early morning hours of Saturday. The storm, which had intense lightning, would drop another 30 millimetres of rain by the time it moved on. Then, the following night, a third storm would then come through the area.

The storm early Sunday morning saw just 17 millimetres of rain falling on Weyburn, but the lightning associated with the storm was so intense there were upwards of 24 lightning flashes observed per minute at times.

The three storms in quick succession brought 80 millimetres of rain to Weyburn in just a week, and more in some of the surrounding areas. So far this month, there have now been 91.7 millimetres of precipitation, according to Environment Canada, to fall on Weyburn, which is nearly double the 30-year average for August of 47.5 millimetres.

There is a chance for a bit more precipitation to fall in the coming days, with Environment Canada saying there is a chance of showers on Wednesday and a good chance of rain on Thursday. You can stay up to date with the latest forecast on the Discover Weyburn Weather page.
