An initiative has launched in Weyburn called WeyStrong. Its aim is to provide support to women in the community who have been diagnosed with cancer.

An organizer with WeyStrong, Lisa Vick, began the initiative due to a need she felt in the community.

“Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and when I was looking for support and different organizations to join, I just wasn't really finding too much. And then I found out that there was a retreat that had happened last year hosted by Jennifer Morris, an oncology nurse here in Weyburn, and a group out of Regina called In Power. So, I thought we could do this here in Weyburn and the support has been phenomenal.”

Vick hopes women find support and friendships within the group through their shared experiences. Thir first event will be a retreat being held on October 20th at the Weyburn Travelodge with various sessions throughout the day. Their initiatives will continue past the retreat as well.

“Following that, we want to hopefully have some ongoing events to support women through movement, through mindful yoga, perhaps, just different things that we can get together and enjoy together.”

Vick says their long-term goals include annual retreats, monthly events, and supporting the new oncology unit that will be a part of the new Weyburn Hospital.

To inquire about the retreat or to register email weystrong2024@gmail.com.

“We just want to spread the word, make sure people know that it's an important group for all women in Weyburn that have ever faced a diagnosis, [even if] you've been cancer free for a long time. Come join us. I mean, we all are still dealing with it in some way, shape or form.”

The community can support the initiative by sponsoring part of the retreat, donating funds, or providing items for comfort bags.

“We hope to send every woman home with a little bag full of different types of goodies, things they might enjoy [or] find comfort in.”
